Penentuan pH suatu larutan dibedakan menjadi 2 yaitu : pH teoritis dan pH pengukuran. pH teoritis merupakan besaran pH dari suatu zat atau larutan yang ditentukan berdasarkan konsep teoritis atau teori asam basa yang berlaku melalui persamaan kimia dan perhitungan matematis.

Perhitungan teoritis dalam menentukan pH ditentukan dari :

pH = - log [H⁺] (untuk larutan asam)

pOH = - log [OH⁻] (untuk larutan basa - potensian ion hidroksida)

pH + pOH = 14

Untuk menentukan [H⁺] dan [OH⁻] adalah sebagai berikut :

   asam kuat, [H⁺] = a × Ma

   asam lemah, [H⁺] = √(Ka × Ma)

   basa kuat, [OH⁻] = b × Mb

   basa lemah, [OH⁻] = √(Kb × Mb)

pH pengukuran merupakan besarnya pH dari suatu zat atau larutan yang ditunjukkan langsung dari alat ukur pH yang digunakan tanpa melalui perhitungan. Besar pH ditunjukkan langsung dari alat ukur yang digunakan yang telah melalui kalibrasi dan baku. Alat ukur pH yang biasanya dipakai antara lain : pH meter, indikator universal, pH portabel.
