- Direct speech is reporting what someone else said or wrote by using the actual words of the speaker or writer.
For example, Jenny said, “I went to Bali yesterday”
- Indirect speech, which is also known as reported speech, is reporting what someone else said or wrote but not using the same words as what the person said or wrote.For example, Jenny said that she had gone to Bali the previous day.
How to change direct speech into indirect speech?
There are some rules to do that:1. Indirect speech doesn’t put the words of the speaker in quotation marks.
2. Indirect always use the conjunction “that”. This conjunction is always used between reporting verb and reported speech.For example:
Direct speech: Jenny said, “I went to Bali yesterday”
Indirect speech: Jenny said that she had gone to Bali the previous day.
3. If the reporting verb is either present tense or future tense, the tense of the reported speech will not change. But, if the reporting verb is past tense, the tense of the reported speech will change.For example:
Direct speech: Jenny says, “I went to Bali yesterday”
Indirect speech: Jenny says that she went to Bali the previous day. (there’s no tense changing)
For example:
Direct speech: Jenny said, “I went to Bali yesterday”Indirect speech: Jenny said that she had gone to Bali the previous day. (tense changed)

The rules of indirect speech for statement will still be used along with some additional rules below (for yes or no question):
1. The question mark will be removed.
2. In indirect speech, the question sentence will be expressed in positive form instead of interrogative form.

Direct speech: She said to me, "are you tired?"
Indirect speech: She asked me if I was tired.
3. The reported verb, such as say or tell in direct speech will be replaced with verb, such as ask or wonder in indirect speech.

For 5W + 1H question, the rules are same. The only difference is in 5W + 1H question the word "if" or "whether" will not be used.
